Much ado about nothing?

Okay so I didn’t get to see much of Jarvis live in games on ESPN UK, however I’ve watched plenty of tape on YouTube and I have to be honest I wasn’t overly impressed. Jones doesn’t seem strong enough to physically dominate offensive tackles, meaning he’s not much of a factor against the run, but does have a good burst off the line of scrimmage.

I know a lot of people have fallen in love with Jones, but I just don’t see it. I watched every snap of the Georgia v Alabama game and Jones was dominated by Tight Ends and showed no pass rushing moves in that game.

Please do not think that Jarvis is a new version of former Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller, because he simply is not. Miller shows both power, speed and I have seen him in coverage. I think I saw Jones in coverage once but the ball wasn’t thrown that way. I would be very uncomfortable if he was covering most running backs in the NFL. The Patriots would motion Woodhead or Vereen out and just blow him away.

Professionals have Jones as a very high 1st round draft pick, but I would stay well away until the later rounds. Especially once you factor in that Jones has a long standing problem with a condition called spinal stenosis – with is described as “a narrowing of the spinal column that causes pressure on the spinal cord, or narrowing of the openings where spinal nerves leave the spinal column”. It was this condition that forced USC to prevent Jones from practicing, causing his transfer to Georgia.

Only time will tell if I’m right but just watch the Alabama highlights below and tell me how he did against a pro-ready offensive-line.

  1. See what you mean. He does seem to do quite a good job of using his hands to keep them vaguely free, but he doesn’t seem to use any recognisable pass rush moves on the rare passing plays, and doesn’t seem to do much to disengage from his blocker. The play at dead on 10 minutes is pretty good though.

  2. I’ve watched several of his games and I do understand your concerns, he isn’t a dynamic athlete but he is a savvy pass-rusher. He actually is better vs the run than most people suggest which helps round off the hit he takes for not producing against elite talent like Bama’s O-line.
In fairness to Jones the O-line for Bama is realistically full of 1st round arguably top-tier NFL starting caliber talent. I started watching Jones’ games and began in the same mindset that you presented in this report, that he was overrated. By the 4th or 5th game I was impressed with his overall pass-rushing ability, a lot of it is the motor and hand usage, he’s not particularly polished, just overly competitive.

His stock could take a hit since he’s not the athlete that Von Miller was and he’s not the polished pass-rusher that Bjoern Werner is, however he’s far better at this juncture than Bruce Irvin was, far better. So while the polish is lacking he displays the requisite motor and the active hands to develop into a 12 sack per year type player.

If there’s anything to be concerned with it’s the report that he doesn’t love the gym and just walks on to the field au naturale which may not produce the same level of production in the NFL.
